2011 and beyond: AFC is planning some great new projects that will begin to take shape in the near future. Stay tuned to hear about and be a part of our upcoming community partnerships and fundraisers.
2011: AFC is currently facilitating a pen pal project connecting a primary school in Cape Town, South Africa with an elementary school in New Jersey, USA. Students/learners in Hout Bay and Maplewood are forging global friendships, learning a little about other cultures and improving their literacy skills in fun and educational ways. We look forward to expanding the pen pal project in September. Check back with us for new and exciting updates.
2010: World Cup South Africa – Felicia Storey organized a group of 20 international volunteers to work at a local school in Hout Bay. Volunteers, including learners, teachers and staff at the school, helped clean, paint walls, plant trees, paint faces, prepare snacks and organize a soccer tournament for local children. Kids were given treats at the end of the day — those who helped plant and clean received an additional gift. School supplies were donated to the school as well. Thanks so much to all those at the school who participated along with our American friends who donated time and funds. Thanks especially to Gailyn Scarpa and Steven Clegg from ABC For Life who teach at the school and who coordinated the event, to Jenifer Phelps, Jason Storey and Josh Grubaugh from Unknown Union who helped make the day a success, to New York photographer Mike Brown for lending his talent and to Rachel Raskin, AFC grant-writer, who also pitched in (her husband, Danny’s world flag face painting was a hit with all the kids who lined up repeatedly).
